Visiting Hours and Policies

Rush is a place of healing, and the safety of our patients, visitors, staff and students is our top priority. To make the most of your visit and to ensure the safest experience possible on our campus, please be aware of our visitor’s policies, including our recently updated visitor check-in policy.

Visitor check-in policy

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Rush has put in place patient and visitor restrictions. For updated information on these restrictions, please view our COVID-19 Patient and Visitor Updates webpage.

When you arrive at Rush to visit a patient in the Tower, Atrium or Kellogg building, you’ll need to check in at one of the following information desk locations:

  • Atrium, fourth floor
  • Edward A. Brennan Entry Pavilion, first floor of Tower
  • Bring a picture ID. When you arrive, you’ll be asked to show a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID, U.S. military credentials, permanent resident card, readable international passport, or matrícula consular ID.
  • Get your photo taken. Our information desk staff will scan your ID and will take a photo of you and any other visitors in your party who are 12 years or older.
  • Receive your visitor’s badge. They will then give your visitor’s badge, which will include your first and last name, your destination, the date and your photo. Your badge will be valid for eight hours. After your badge expires, you can visit the information desk to get a new badge.
  • Wear your badge so it is easy to see. Please make sure your visitor’s badge is always visible while you are at the hospital. If it is not visible, any member of the Rush staff may ask you to show it to them.
  • Don’t forget to check out. When you are ready to leave Rush, please stop by a security post to check out of the hospital and return your visitor’s badge.

Currently, the visitor check-in policy is only for inpatient visitors. However, anyone accompanying an outpatient to a procedure in these three buildings will need to register and receive a visitor’s badge.

Visiting hours

  • Monday through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Some units may have different visiting hours. If you are unsure, please call the hospital operator at (312) 942-5000 to be transferred to a specific unit to find out the visiting hours for that unit.

Visitor policies

  • The intensive care and other select units have special visitor policies. Please check with the specific unit or call the hospital operator at (312) 942-5000 to be transferred to a specific unit and find out the specific policies.
  • We ask that no more than two people visit a patient at one time.
  • Children under age 16 years are not permitted to visit unaccompanied unless special arrangements are made with the nurse in charge.

Family members

Rush is committed to including your loved ones in your care. We understand and interpret the terms “family” or “family member” to include the following:

  • Biological and/or legal family members (e.g., spouses, children, siblings, parents, grandparents)
  • Extended family members (e.g. grandchildren, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts)
  • Other visitors of your choice (e.g., domestic or civil union partners of the same or different sex, significant others, caretakers, guardians, agents, friends), regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.
